...More about Metal Roofing
| When it comes to putting a roof on a home, or
replacing a roof, the costs can be pretty
astronomical. Unfortunately, this size investment
can sometimes end up failing in less than 10 years.
That’s why more and more people are turning to metal
roofs. In most cases, metal roofs can last at least
20 years, and sometimes they can last as long as 50.
Easily shrugging off the effects or rain, snow and
wind and being completely immune to damage from
fire, mildew, insects and rot, which plague other
types of roofs, metal is a great choice of roofing
material. |
 |
Metal roofs are also much lighter than
traditional tile roofs. Most metal roofs run between
50 to 150 pounds per square (100 square feet). This
is just a fraction of the amount of tile roofs – 750
pounds per square for tile and up to 900 pounds per
square for concrete tile. One benefit of this
lightweight material is that you can in some cases
gain its benefits by laying metal roofs over the top
of existing roofs without removing the original.
In addition, metal roofs are easy to install.
Since they come commonly in large sheets of
connected shingles, they can be installed faster
than other types of roofs. You can expect to shave a
day or two off the time of a traditional roof
installation by opting for metal roofs.

There are a few drawbacks to metal roofs, but
they mostly are a matter of personal taste. First,
metal costs as much as most other premium roofing
materials. It’s possible to save money if you go
with a lesser material, but obviously you won’t have
the benefits of metal. In addition, some people
dislike the way that rain sounds when it hits a
metal roof – it is significantly louder than with
traditional tile roofs.
Metal roofs are also subject to marring and
denting. One common cause of denting is from large
hailstones. However, just walking on a painted metal
roof can cause marring if a person isn’t careful.
Needless to say, metal is also very slippery when
its wet. Generally speaking you won’t need to worry
about walking on a metal roof, since it’s unlikely
to be damaged, but it is important to know
nonetheless. |
There are a few different types of metal roofing
to choose from. Contact an experienced metal roofing
contractor for advice on which type of metal roofing
to select for your home and an estimate on the costs
of installation.
